Although sexual rejection is rarely discussed, it has negative effects on both men and women.  Event studies have shown that this issue can even destroy a marriage.

American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy did a study to determine how sexual rejection affects males. It conducted interviews with males who had been in a relationship for 14 years.

The study indicated that males who were rejected for sexual activity frequently interpreted this as their partner’s not wanting them.

Nonetheless, regardless of a person’s gender, sex is an integral part of a relationship. However, “the sentiments of both genders may differ to it.”

Sex is a means for women to show their emotions or affection. Men satisfy their want for love, connection, solace, and caring through sex.  Depriving someone of this necessity can therefore have severe repercussions.

How Rejecting Sex Affects Men

Rejection of sex signifies rejection of the male ego, which, when done repeatedly, can lead to annoyance, frustration, and lack of trust, resulting in suspicion and disinterest in the partner. Regular rejection of sex might also cause men to seek sex outside of a relationship.

How Rejecting Sex Affects Women

Sexual rejection affects not only men but also women. Rejection hurts because the human brain reacts very similarly to physical pain, and this is true for both men and women. It could provoke a variety of emotions in women, including guilt, wrath, irritation, uncertainty, and dread. Similarly to men, their confidence and self-image could be severely damaged.

  • One should know the subtle signals that can indicate whether your partner is sexually ready. These include a lack of desire for physical contact, a desire to avoid non-sexual physical contact, and irritation.

  • Men should know the fact that women frequently avoid sexual activity when the relationship looks to lack closeness when they are worried or unhappy when they are afflicted with physical conditions, and when they have had terrible past experiences.

  • Lack of awareness about physical intimacy is a fairly prevalent cause in young and naive spouses.

  • Women should understand that sexual rejection may be caused by issues with male partners, such as inappropriate sexual preferences and sexual dysfunction.

  • The frequency of rejection is quite subjective as couples may not always share identical levels of sexual interest. So what seems like regular rejection to one partner may not be seen as out of ordinary by the other.
