Defining Karana in Astrology – What is it?  

Half of the tithi is known as, ‘Karana.’ It’s based on lunar tithi or day. The Karana completes when the moon completes six degrees. 

You will find two karanas in a tithi. One of them ends with the end of a date or a tithi. 

Astrology talks about eleven kinds of Karanas. All of these karanas repeat in a particular order through the 30-lunar month. Seven Karanas appear eight times in 2 paksha which totals to 56.

Classification of Karanas and their Effects 

There are eleven types of ‘Karanas’ in astrology. The names are: Balav, Bav, Taytil, Gar, Vishti, Vanij, Chaturshpad, kinstughna, Shakuni, Nag, and Kaulav. 

The first seven karanas in the panchang are known as, ‘char.’ The last four karnas are known as, ‘Sthir.’ The last four, ‘Chatushpad, Shakuni, Naag, and Kinshtughna’ are known as Sthir because they only come in a particular period. 

It starts from the second half of the dark fortnight or the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi and ends by the bright fortnight or the Shukla Paksha Pratipada. 

The first seven are called char because they appear repeatedly in a particular sequence. It starts from the second half of the bright fortnight and ends by the dark fortnight.
