Celebrations on Thrissur Pooram

Two rival organisations representing the two divisions of Thrissur Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi celebrate the Pooram Festival by challenging and pledging to outdo each other with a more spectacular fireworks show. Each group is permitted to exhibit no more than fifteen elephants. The groups leave no stone left in their pursuit of the finest elephants and parasols in South India to adorn the elephants. The festivities begin early in the morning and continue until daybreak the next day.

The parade of Thiruvambadi Pooram to the Vadakkumnatha Temple grounds and back is not only vital, but also highly energising, with the amazing and mesmerising effect of the Panchavadyam, a combination of five percussion and wind instruments, to be felt and appreciated.

In addition to the great elephant march, percussion, and musical acts, the pooram festival is renowned for its spectacular fireworks display. The firework display begins early and lasts three to four hours.
