The fourth month of the Tamil calendar, Aadi Masam, or Adi, is considered bad by many since the Dakshinayana Punyakalam begins in this month. The Aadi Masam will begin on July 16 and end on August 17 in 2022.

However, because various Tamil Hindu rituals and celebrations take place in the month of Aadi, it is considered auspicious by some.

Some individuals believe that Aadi is unpleasant because of the sun’s southerly movement. The night of Devas will last for the following six months.

In these trying times, when Mother Nature is steadily losing her kind and benign nature, aadi masam is vital. She’s progressively transforming into Mother Kali, the all-consuming, violent goddess.

We are perpetuating Adharma in the name of development, which is nothing more than greed. It is annihilating all life things on the planet. Aadi months used to be a period for reflection and healing. It was a moment when we humans began to acknowledge Mother Nature’s importance in our lives.

Let us each plant and care for a tree during Aadi Masam. Let us worship Nature in the same way that our forebears did.

Why Do Newly wed Brides Return Home During Aadi Month?

Some societies used to segregate newlywed couples during the Aadi month. The bride’s parents used to welcome her back to their home. This was due to the fact that women who conceived during the Aadi month gave birth during the warmest months of April and May.

Infant mortality rates were high during the warmer months in the past, when there were no hospitals.

This custom is now only practised in traditional families.

Rituals

Aadi Pirappu is celebrated on the first day of Aadi. It denotes the start of the month. The day starts with the creation of massive kolams (Rangoli patterns) in front of the house.

Every day of the month, a kolam is drawn. The red hue – Kaavi – is used to border the kolams. Mango leaves are used to embellish the doorways. The day begins with pujas and a temple visit. On the day, there will be a feast with special delicacies such as payasam, vadai, and boli.

Married women change the yellow thread in their Mangalsutra or thali on the first day of Aadi. The night of the Devas, Dakshinayana Punyakalam, begins on the first day of the month Aadi. On July 16, 2022, it will be commemorated. On this day, several communities perform Tarpanam.

During this season, the sun reverses its direction, and the gods’ night lasts for six months. As a result, no fortunate activities are scheduled for the month.
