There is a Huge buzz about “Badhaai Do”, a Rajkummar Roa and Bhumi Pednakar starrer movie on “Lavender Marriage”.  Interestingly, the male protagonist of the movie is gay and the female one is a lesbian. And they decide to get married in a “lavender marriage” so that people won’t look too closely at their lives.

Even though not many people know about lavender marriage, it is a real thing in India that has been hidden for hundreds of years by the way people have judged it.

What is a Lavender Marriage?

In a marriage of convenience, a man and a woman who are homosexual agree to marry each other so that they look like a straight couple to the outside world.

The reason behind this lies in being able to live a life peacefully with their homosexual partner secretly so that their conservative family members do not create any physical, mental or emotional trauma for them.

Why it is gaining ground in INDIA?

Even though Section 377 of the IPC was ruled not to be a crime in a landmark case, many LGBTQ people still find it hard to come out of the closet in front of their families. Many of these people have a hard time living comfortably because they don’t have the chance or space to be honest about their sexual orientation.

People in most parts of India can’t accept the LGBTQ community due to their old ideas that are deeply rooted in our society.  The idea of same-gender marriage sends nightmares to many people.

As a result, LGBTQ people are afraid of being rejected by society and shamed by their families, so many of them hide behind the truth. And that’s the whole point of a Lavender marriage.

Lavender marriage is a way for people to legally commit to and marry people of the opposite sex so they can live a happy life with their gay partner in secret.

Even though this may not be the freedom LGBTQ people want, it is the most viable option available in India.
