“Life is not perfect “and this theory is agreed upon unanimously by all of us. Many times we come across situations where things do not go according to the plan set by us . Losing one’s job is one of those things that one is not prepared for. It is one of the most heartbreaking and stressful experiences an individual can go through. It not only affects financial stability but also affects one’s mood, personal relationships, and emotional and mental wellbeing.

Unemployment is a major concern for a developing country like India where approx. 5% of Indians are jobless. When it comes to women, the situation is even worse where nearly 8.7% of women are jobless and unemployed men account for approx. 4.3% which is relatively lower for women but still a major worrisome fact. These figures are discussed mainly to address the reality that stress related to unemployment is a real threat and there are many people suffering from it.

Our jobs are not only our source of income but also a part of our lifestyle. All human beings are social animals and we learn to live with each other and share experiences at our workplace. Each day we influence others or get influenced at work. We make friends, learn to grow, face challenges, develop new skills and learn each day at our job. Losing your job suddenly can leave you shocked, depressed and emotionally angry or hurt. After losing a job one loses his /her financial independence and then one is dependent on others, one lacks the sense of independence, dullness comes in life and one feels tied up.

It is very natural to feel jealous, envious, low and angry when you lose your job and you see other well-settled people with enterprising jobs do well in life. These people have the freedom to live their lives at their own expense and are self-reliant.

What can be felt during unemployment?

You may suffer from the following problems during your tenure of unemployment.

  • Inability to feel relaxed
  • Low self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Anxiety-related to future
  • Irritable mood

The anxiety and stress can take a toll on one’s mental health but one must try to remain strong in such situations. Not all individuals are alike and not all people have the same level of endurance to adapt to stress in life due to unemployment. So each individual can become a victim of unemployment at some point in time and one must find the best suitable way to deal with it individually, but the key is not to give up and keep trying.

The trial and error method is the best method which works eventually and we should make our choices with utter honesty to come to a positive outcome and overcome the stress. Overcoming stress and tough times truly defines a person’s real character.
