Ganesh Jayanti, also known as Maghi Ganeshotsav, is an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Ganesha in the Magh months of  January and February.

The date for Ganesh Jayanti in 2024 is February 13.

In various regions of Maharashtra and Goa, this day is celebrated as Bhagavan Ganesh’s birthday. Til Kund Chaturthi or Til Kund Chauth is another name for the event, which is very important to Ganapati believers in Maharashtra.

According to the traditional Marathi Hindu lunar calendar, Ganesh Jayanti is celebrated on the fourth day of the waxing phase of the moon (Shukla Paksha) in the Magh month. Varad Chaturthi and Til Chaturthi are two other names for the same day.

How is Ganesh Jayanti celebrated?

  1. An image of Ganesha is made from Turmeric powder or Sindoor powder and it is worshipped.
  2. On the fourth day, the idol is submerged in water.

  • Til (sesame)-based food is eaten throughout the day.

  • After applying Til paste, Ganesha followers bathe the next day.

  • All Ganesha Temples in the state hold special prayers, rituals, and pujas. On this day, special offerings are made for peace and prosperity.

It is important to note that Ganesh Jayanti should not to be confused with the well-known Vinayaka Chaturthi festival, which takes place in Bhadrapad month (August/September).
