The Garuda Purana is named after Garuda, Vishnu’s chariot. The second part of the Garuda Purana deals with information about the deceased’s trip and the rites that must be done by the family in order for the dead to have a pleasant journey.

Garuda Purana is one of the eighteen Puranas penned by Veda Vyasa, and it is said that Hindu God Vishnu personally revealed it to Garuda.

Previously, once a person died in a traditional Hindu family, a priest was summoned to read the Garuda Purana so that relatives might conduct Shradh and other ceremonies for the deceased.  Unfortunately, the majority of Hindu households no longer do this.

Many individuals nowadays feel that keeping the book Garuda Purana in their homes is harmful. Many people avoid reading the book for fear of death in the family. Some societies only read it for the first 10 days following a person’s death. The truth is that these are all rumours, all Hindu texts should be studied and comprehended. All texts have one goal: to help people comprehend their actual nature.
