Margashirsha Purnima is the Purnima that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Margashirsha month. Margashisrsha Purnima is also known by the titles Battisi Purnima and Korala Purnima. The month of Margashirsha Poonam is renowned as the month of religious activity, worship, and charity, according to ancient Hindu texts. This month is seen to mark the start of the Satyug period, which is why Tapasya, worship, and other auspicious activities undertaken on this day are very beneficial. On this day, bathing in the sacred rivers of Haridwar, Banaras, and Prayagraj is considered extremely auspicious.

Margashirsha Purnima is also known as “Battissi Purnima,” “Korala Purnima,” “Naraka Purnima,” or “Margashirsha Poonam Udyatithi Purnima” in some parts of India.

Significance of Margashirsha Purnima Vrat

On Margashirsha Purnima, it is believed that young ladies who take a divine dip in the River Yamuna would find their long-awaited life partner. In the Hindu calendar, the time of Margashirsha is considered exceedingly auspicious.

This month is also known as ‘Magsar, Agahan, or Agrahayan’ in Hindu holy sacred literature. Cleaning up in the sacred streams on Margashirsha Purnima is just as important as it is during the lunar months of Vaishakh, Kartika, and Magha.

Similarly, fasting on the arrival of Margashirsha Purnima satisfies all longings or wants. Intellectuals and researchers believe that by completing great deeds on this auspicious day, all misdeeds would be forgiven.

Lord Vishnu is revered as ‘Narayana’ on Margashirsha Purnima. This month was referred to in the Puranas as ‘Maasonam Margashirshoham,’ implying that there is no month more promising than Margashirsha. The Full Moon day in the auspicious month of Margashirsha, according to the Hindu calendar, is celebrated as ‘Margashirsha Purnima.’

Aficionados perform ritual showers in sacred streams on this day and devote their lives to Lord Vishnu. The Moon God is revered by Hindu devotees since it is believed that on this day, Moon was honoured with ‘Amrit.’ The ninth month of the Hindu calendar is Margashirsha Maas, and according to Hindu sacred texts, this is the month of commitment.

In a few sanctuaries dedicated to Lord Dattatreya in South India, unusual customs are observed. “Dattatreya Jayanti” is another name for Margashirsha Purnima. Master Dattatreya is regarded as a Trimurti emblem (Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh). According to folklore, Lord Dattatreya incarnated on earth in the Pradosh Kaal on Margashirsha Purnima, and this day has since been commemorated as His entrance to the world.

Margashirsha Purnima Vrat Vidhi and Puja

• Fasting on this day and conducting God and Goddess Puja on this day will take you along a path of happiness and wealth.
• On this day, there are a number of rites that must be followed while fasting.
• Pray to Lord Narayana. Early in the morning, bathe in a holy river, and swear to fast while thinking in the name of the Lord.
• Before you begin the Puja, wear white garments and perform achamanam (purification ritual before Puja), and then meditate in the name of God by saying “ऊँ नमोः नारायण”.
• Flowers and fragrances should be offered to God.
  Make a Puja sthal for the Havan and an altar for it. Offer ahuti-oil, ghee, bura, and other items to the Agni during the Havan.
• After you’ve finished the Havan, finish your fast by meditating on Lord Vishnu’s name.
• At night, sleep close to the Lord’s idol.
• The next day, it is recommended that Dan-Dakshina be performed and that the needy Brahmins be fed.
