Meditation is a powerful technique for calming the mind and connecting with your more serene self. It can assist you in overcoming various mental obstacles, nourishing your creative side, boosting your productivity, and making you feel generally happy.

However, there is one kind of meditation, which can be both beneficial for you and your pet.  We call it Pet meditation (sometimes also called dog meditation)

What is Pet Meditation?

Pet meditation (dog meditation) is the act of meditating with your pet next to you or in the vicinity where you can feel their energy and hold the intention to connect. In pet meditation, you can create a sense of serenity, love, and safety by focusing on your pet’s presence, rhythms, and the link you share with it. Numerous anecdotal and empirical evidence suggests that animals such as dogs and cats are much more suitable for pet meditation than other animals.

Who should Participate in this Type of Meditation?

  1. Those who may not feel comfortable meditating alone
  2. Those with mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.
  3. Those who are lonely stressed out, or in bodily or emotional discomfort.

However, persons with severe mental health issues, such as schizophrenia or psychosis, should consult a physician before attempting meditation.

Benefits of Pet Meditation on Humans

  • Meditation becomes more fun: Some individuals may find traditional meditation to be monotonous and insufficiently engaging. For some, meditation with pets can add a delightful, joyful, and playful sense of external purpose.

  • Strengthens human-animal bond: Meditation with a pet can become a ritual that fosters a profound emotional connection.

  • Boosts mood: Simply being around a pet can improve mood and alleviate stress. Even simple interactions with animals, such as petting, have been shown to alleviate stress, despair, and anxiety.

  • Wellbeing, resilience and quality of life: Bonding with animals can alleviate feelings of isolation and fear and improve quality of life. There may be physical benefits such as decreased pain, exhaustion, blood pressure, and stress hormones.

Benefits of Pet Meditation on Pets

  • Meditation may have a calming effect on animals, especially relaxation, which can be quite beneficial for high-energy dogs.

  • Animals thrive on routine, which improves their behaviour. Additionally, they perceive and respond to their master’s energy, which becomes more tranquil during meditation. Creating a regular time for meditation can have a profoundly good effect on the behaviour of animals.

  • Meditation helps pets feel more grounded and increases the level of trust between you and them. This is especially important if you have a new pet or if you rescued or adopted your pet.

  • Just like people, pets can feel happier and more at peace when their stress reaction is interrupted by meditation. This enables the body’s natural healing process to operate properly, which is especially beneficial for elderly and ill pets.

How to Practice Pet Meditation

According to some practitioners, these three are the most practised “Pet meditation”  types:-

  • A pet body scan – is a modified body scan meditation technique that involves focusing on your pet’s body parts instead of your own.

  • Meditational walks with your pets are another way to achieve mindfulness in the company of your pet animal.

  • Just Observing your pet, and holding it close to you can help you experience more stable concentration during meditative practice.
