When Was Meera Born? 

Meera or Meerabai as referred to was born in a Royal Rajput family in Kudki in the year 1498. Her father was Raja Ratan Singh and her mother was Veer Kumari. Her unbreakable bond with Lord Sri Krishna was formed when she was just a 4-year-old child. 

Later on, Meerabai became popular due to her great influence on the Bhakti movement. Most historians and legends believe that Meera was highly devoted to her family, society, and her husband Krishna. 

The Love Story About Meera and Krishna – Who is Meera in Krishna’s Life?  

Meera went to attend a wedding with her mother at age 4. Fascinated by the concept, she asked her mother who would be her husband. Smiling at the innocence of Meerabai, her mother looked around and found an idol of Sri Krishna. She pointed at the idol and said that Meera would be married to Krishna. 

Veera Kumari (Meerabai’s mother) soon forgot the banter. However, Meerabai instantly fell in love with Krishna. She started to love Krishna and the world witnessed the finest example of true love, loyalty, and devotion. 

Meera always believed that Krishna would marry her. She started singing at a very early age to express her true love for her expected groom. Her voice was so fascinating that people used to gather around whenever she started singing.       

Marriage of Meera – Who is Meera in Krishna’s Life? 

Meerabai had pledged her heart and soul to Krishna at a wedding at the age of 4, but neither her parents nor society approved of it. She was soon married off to Bhoj Raj, the son of Maharana of Mewar, Rana Sanga. 

She took the idol of Krishna to her husband’s house. She never forgot Krishna after her marriage. Instead, she started visiting the temple of Krishna regularly. She started singing bhajans and hymns at the temple in her memory of her beloved, Krishna. 

Her love for Krishna started growing stronger and stronger. Ultimately, Meerabai’s mother-in-law got worried. She suggested Meera should worship Maa Kali instead of Krishna. Meera promptly turned down the suggestion.           

After the refusal of Meera to worship Kali Mata, her husband and his relatives started doubting her loyalty. Once, at midnight, her husband and his sister visited Meera at Krishna’s temple. She was softly murmuring to Krishna’s idol. It angered her husband who demanded that she bring her lover out in the open. All that Meera did was point out Krishna’s idol. Whilst her in-laws didn’t support her devotion, surprisingly, her husband started supporting her Bhakti.

Meera Krishna Love Story in Hindi – Did Krishna Love Meera?

Everybody knows that Meerabai was in love with Sri Krishna. But, the question that many want an answer to is whether or not Krishna loved Meera too. 

So, here’s the other angle of Meera and Krishna’s story that proves that Sri Krishna loved her as much as she loved him:

After Bhoj Raj (Meerabai’s lawfully wedded husband) had found out that Meera loved lord Krishna, he had been left disappointed but he had approved of her Bhakti. But, his family didn’t. They made recurrent attempts to murder Meera. 

Once, Rana’s family sent a basket containing garlands and a snake to kill Meera. When Meera opened the basket, she found Krishna’s idol instead of the snake. It was Krishna who saved her life. A lot of efforts were made to kill Meera but Krishna saved her life every single time. 

Another tale mentions that Krishna once turned poison into Amrit when Meera was presented with poison in the name of Prasad. Surprisingly, Meera knew that she was being given poison in the name of prasad. But she did not turn down the offer as she believed that Krishna would save her, and he did. 

The Role of Tulsidas in the Story about Meera and Krishna – Is Meera and Radha Same? 

Meera loved Krishna but the constant disapproval from her in-laws bothered her. So, she once sent a letter to Tulsidas asking for his advice. The advice of Tulsidas created a fascinating twist in the story about Meera and Krishna. 

Meera asked Tulsidas what she should do about the opposition of the people for her love for Krishna. Tulsidas asked her to leave all those people who did not understand her feelings. He told her that all other relationships are weaker than her love for God. 

After getting this message from Tulsidas, Meera promptly left her husband and in-laws and went to Dwarka to spend her whole life with Krishna. Her family asked her to return home after a few years. Meera replied that she’d have to take the permission of her husband, Krishna. When Bhoj Raj and his family didn’t hear from Meera after several days, they went to Dwarka to get her back. What they found instead was the saree of Meera wrapped around Krishna’s idol. Meera could not be found anywhere. 

To date, it is still believed that Meerabai’s soul got immersed in Krishna (sometime in the year 1547) before her in-laws could have forcefully taken her away. 

Many scholars still argue that Meerabai was the reincarnation of Radha. The topic is, however, debatable.
