Career

With the help of British pop icon George Michael, Savage launched her career when she was sixteen years old, singing backup vocals. She has since performed alongside a long list of international superstars, including Blue Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli, and Mary J. Blige. ‘The Black Eyed Peas,’ Robbie Williams, Eminem, Destiny’s Child, Sting, 50 Cent, and other legendary artists have shared the stage with her.

While enrolled at “Berklee,” she auditioned for “The X Factor” in its UK version in 2006. Savage remembers her time on the show as a depressing journey into the shadow side of fame, even though she made it to the final 24. Reportedly struggling to adapt to the limelight, the singer went on to call the disappointment of not making it to the last 12 a “painful” blow.

After finalizing a songwriting agreement with industry powerhouse ‘Sony/ ATV’ in 2009, she was able to pen songs for artists including Mýa, Monica, Babyface, and Fantasia Barrino. ‘Catch Me,’ a soul-influenced ballad she wrote with Monica, stands out among their duets. Fantasia and “Collard Greens & Cornbread” were also notable collaborators; the song was nominated for a Grammy the year after.

During this time, Savage composed the song “Push Push” by Kat Deluna, which featured DJ David Guetta and Senegalese superstar Akon, as well as the song “Oh Yeah” by Bajan pop artist Jaicko, which featured American rap superstar Snoop Dogg. On Whitney Houston’s 2009 farewell CD, “I Look to You,” she contributed background vocals as well.

‘For Coloured Girls,’ a Nigerian version of an American play, was the singer’s acting debut in 2011. Pepsi also made history by signing her, the first female African musician to ever do so. On the second season of “Nigerian Idol,” she co-hosted alongside MC IllRymz.

Savage learned about Nigeria’s burgeoning Afropop culture during a meeting with her future husband, Tunji Balogun, who was an A&R operative at “Interscope Records” at the time. Returning to Nigeria with the goal of establishing a solo career, she encountered initial opposition. But she persisted nevertheless, and she and Balogun quickly established their own label imprint, 323 Entertainment.

The newly formed label “Mavin Records,” run by the acclaimed Nigerian producer Don Jazzy, was quickly partnered with “323 Entertainment.” ‘Mavin’ signed Savage in 2012, and she went on to appear on their 2012 collection, Solar Plexus.

The first single by Savage, “Kele Kele Love,” was published to great popularity and praise from ‘Mavin’ and ‘323.’ Subsequent singles by Savage include ‘Ife Wa Gbona,’ ‘Without My Heart,’ and ‘Love Me (3x).’ Her 2013 debut album, “Once Upon a Time,” which was promoted by these tracks, went on to get multiple award nominations.

An appearance by Savage in the 2013 season of the ‘MTV’ show ‘Shuga’ was a step forward in her acting career. It wasn’t long before she said she had “the knack” for acting and wanted to do it more. She has endorsement relationships with ‘MTN Nigeria,’ ‘Maggi,’ which is owned by ‘Nestlé,’ and ‘Forte Oil,’ among others.
