Aarti is an important part of Hindu devotion and puja. A devoted Hindu follows the daily ritual of performing Aarti in front of their deities.  However, the right way to perform aarti as mentioned in the Hindu tradition is very important for its best benefits.

Follow these guidelines to correctly perform the aarti of your deities.

  • A light with five wicks is the best option.

  • Ghee is the best medium for lighting a lamp. Sesame oil is another alternative.

  • In front of the deity, the plate with the lit lamp should be waved in a full round in the counter clockwise direction

  • The aarti plate should never be waved above the deity’s head.

  • The Aarti should then be placed in front of the god, and prayers should be chanted or meditation performed.

  • After doing the puja, one should wait a while before putting off the lamp.

It is important to note that allowing the lamp to emit black vapours is not considered auspicious.
