Who is Annamacharya ?

Tallapaka Annamacharya (Annamayya) is the earliest Indian musician known to have composed sankirtanas praising Lord Venkateswara. He is the first composer of carnatic music known to history. The musical form of his “Keertana” melodies, which are still popular among Carnatic musicians, has had a significant impact on the compositional structure of Carnatic music.

Annamacharya is remembered for his virtuous life, and devotees and pious musicians venerate him as a great devotee of Vishnu. He is believed to have been the avatar of “Nandakam”, the sword of Vishnu.

Annamacharya regarded his works as floral tributes to Venkateswara. In the Keertanas, he praises the deity, describes his affection for him, argues and quarrels with the Lord, admits the devotee’s failures and fears, and submits to Lord Venkateshwara. In his later Keertanas, he advocates for morality, dharma, and justice.

All are welcome to attend the event, in which Sydney’s musicians will perform “Annamacharya Kritis” and appease Lord Sri Venkateswara, Goddess Mahalakshmi, and Goddess Andal.
