A Hindu must have heard of the Shiva Yajur Mantra, also known as theKarpur Gauram Karunavtaaram. It is an old Sanskrit Shloka relating to Lord Shiva and a popular aarti in the Shaivism religion.

Yajurveda, one of the four sacred writings of Hindu Dharma, the Vedas, contains the Karpur Gauram mantra.

The most prominent Hindu deity is Lord Shiva, one of the Trinity Gods also known as Shankar, Rudra, Bholenath, Nilkantha, and Mahadeva.

Karpur Gauram Mantra

कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं
संसारसारम् भुजगेन्द्रहारम् 
सदावसन्तं हृदयारविन्दे
भवं भवानीसहितं नमामि 

Line by Line Meaning

karpūragauraṁ karuṇāvatāraṁ

Meaning:  Lord Shiva who is as pure/white as camphor (Karpur).  The person whose personality is the embodiment of compassion and who is the incarnation of compassion.


sansārsāram bhujagendrahāram |

Meaning:  The one who is the essence of the whole creation. The one with the serpent king as his garland.


sadāvasantaṁ hṛdayāravinde

Meaning: Hridaya aravinde means ‘in heart’ (pure in form of lotus). Lotus, however, is born in dirty water, even the mud around it does not affect it. In the same way, Lord Shiva always (always) lives (spring) in the heart of creatures, so that no one is affected by world affairs.

bhavaṁ bhavānīsahitaṁ namāmi ||

Meaning: To the Lord Accompanied by the Goddess Bhavani (A form of Goddess Parvati, Shiva’s consort), I bow
