Who is Kevin Harvick?
Kevin Michael Harvick came into this world on December 8, 1975, in the great American city of Bakersfield. Amber is Harvick’s younger sister. Mike and JoNell Harvick are his parents. After he finished kindergarten, his parents gave him a go-kart, and he began kart racing at an early age.
While growing up, Harvick was a fan of IndyCar driver Rick Mears, who was also from Bakersfield. The two even went go-kart racing together, with Clint being Mears’ son. He won seven national titles and two Grand Nationals while competing in go-karts.
Not long after graduating from high school in 1992, Harvick began competing in late-model races in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series. In his final year of high school, he wrestled for North High School and made it to the CIF Central Section championship match in his weight class, which he did while racing wasn’t in session.
Soccer, basketball, baseball, and football were all activities in which Harvick took part. After finishing high school, he planned to study architecture at Bakersfield College, but he eventually dropped out to devote himself full-time to racing.
Career
At Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Harvick debuted in the Craftsman Truck Series in 1995, driving the family-owned No. 72 truck and starting 27th. He finished 27th in that race.
He drove the No. 72 in four races the following year, with an eleventh-place finish at Mesa Marin being his best finish. He joined Spears Motorsports in the middle of the 1997 season and drove the No. 75, where he finished in eighth place on two occasions.
Despite not competing all season, he managed to finish 17th in the points standings and finish in the top five three times in 1997.
In his maiden year of Busch Series competition in 2000, Harvick accepted a ride in Richard Childress Racing’s No. 2 Chevrolet. He finished third in the standings and had a stellar performance with three victories, eight top-fives, and sixteen top-tens.
His father, Dale Earnhardt, passed away in the 2001 Daytona 500, thus he took over for him that year.

He finished every race in a steady pattern until his triumph at Michigan, where he snapped a 65-race winless skid and became the season’s fifteenth different winner, except four DNFs. Harvick won his 60th race in Richmond a week after that. Following the Southern 500, Harvick’s car caught fire, causing him to finish 33rd and drop him to 16th position, putting him last in the playoff standings.
When Ross Chastain made contact with Bubba Wallace—driving for Michael Jordan’s team—on lap 33 of the next week’s Kansas race, Harvick careened into the wall. It has never happened before in Harvick’s career that he would suffer three straight DNFs.

To help collegiate athletes achieve their dual aspirations of playing sports and completing an undergraduate degree, the Kevin Harvick Athletic Scholarship was established.
Full tuition is awarded annually to deserving students. Working in tandem with UNC-Chapel Hill and California State University, Bakersfield, the KH Foundation raised money for athletic scholarships for students.
