Significance of Linga Worship in Hindu Religion

To date, it is unclear when the Hindu faith began to worship the Linga or Lingam. However, Linga worship has been linked to Lord Shiva throughout history.

As a result, the Linga is also known as Shivling or Shivlingam and is revered in Hinduism.

Importance of Shivling

Lord Shiva has been worshipped in the form of a ‘ling’ or a ‘lingam’ since the beginning of time. The word ling means ‘sign’ or ‘symbol.’ It is a visible symbol of Nirguna Brahman (the supreme being) that can be found in all living things.

Linga is derived from the two Sanskrit terms laya (dissolution) and agaman (recreation). As a result, the linga represents both the Lord’s creative and destroying power, and followers regard it with tremendous reverence.

The ‘ling’ has a variety of meanings and symbolisms nowadays. The symbolism of Shivling has been the subject of thousands of pages of writing. However, the best explanation is that the ‘ling’ is a visible manifestation of Brahman that can be found in all living and non-living things in this world.
