Rudraksha is a seed traditionally used as prayer beads in Hinduism. It is commonly worn for protection and chanting the Om Namah Shivaya mantra by devotees

Rudraksha is formed from two words “Rudra” means Shiva and “aksha” means eye. Therefore, Rudraksha means “the eye of Lord Shiva”.

The myths regarding the origin of Rudraksha are closely associated with Hindu God Shiva

Some Stories behind the origins of “Rudraksha”

Tears of Shiva is Rudraksha

Rudraksha trees were produced from Shiva’s tears, according to Hindu Puranas. Shiva is said to have spent thousands of years in intense meditation.

Then one day he opened his eyes and observed people suffering from ignorance all around him.

Tears from his eyes, overwhelmed by compassion, fell on various parts of the soil and grew into Rudraksha trees.

Story of Rudraksha From Padma Purana

Another legend about Rudraksha’s origin can be found in the Padma Purana.

Because of a boon granted by Lord Brahma, the demon Tripura had become unstoppable. He overthrew the ‘devas’ and began dominating them. Finally, the ‘devas’ asked for Lord Shiva’s help.

Lord Shiva’s perspiration fell to the ground while fighting the Demon Tripura, and the Rudraksha trees sprang from it.
